Junk Removal Services 101
Junk hauling and removal services specialize in getting rid of bulky household items. This could include anything from an old, big screen TV to a rusty basketball hoop. In many cases, these are items that cannot be picked up by your regular trash service.
Some common items include:
- Old mattresses - Appliances (stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.) - Cabinets, doors, and other building materials - Furniture (dressers, TV stands, tables, bookshelves, etc.) - TVs, speakers, and other AV equipment - Scrap metal - Yard waste and landscaping materials - Construction waste and debris - Play equipment, bicycles, and toys
However, there are some items that the company may not be able to take. For example, junk removal companies cannot typically take hazardous materials or animal waste. Before hiring a company, ask if they have a list of prohibited items available.

How do junk removal companies charge?
Many companies base their rates on the volume, rather than the weight, of your pickup. You will only be charged for the amount of space your items occupy in the truck. This is typically measured by the cubic foot. Most companies will have a minimum pick-up though.
Companies may charge a little differently for the removal of construction and landscaping materials. This might include concrete, tile, brick, fill dirt, or gravel. For these jobs, junk removal companies typically charge by the cubic yard.
Note: There may be an additional cost associated with removing certain items from your property. For example, removing over-sized freezers and old tires may add to the cost of your project.
Average rates around the country
1) In Seattle, you can expect to pay about $245 for the removal of a 1/2 truck load of household junk.
2) In Atlanta, GA, the average cost of a 1/2 truck load pickup (or about 9 cubic yards of junk) is between $176 to $228.
3) Junk removal rates in New York City are some of the highest in the country. You can expect to pay over $300 to remove that same 1/2 truck load of junk.

Commercial and Office Junk Removal
Businesses can also benefit from the services of a junk removal company. They can help you get rid of old desks, filing cabinets, extra computer monitors, and other assorted furniture and appliances. They will also be able to recycle any materials that may still be usable.

Requesting an Estimate
One of the easiest ways to get started on your project is to contact a few local companies. After requesting multiple estimates, you will have the opportunity to compare each quote and learn more about each company.
Keep in mind that the lowest bid is not always the best deal. Take a few extra minutes to verify that the company is fully insured and properly licensed in your state. Working with an unlicensed contractor can be very risky.
